Batch 64: Steam beer
A straightforward steam beer featuring Northern
Brewer hops. Can't go wrong. Was a favorite of
Jess's, despite the assertive bitterness. Its only
flaw was that it never cleared (and that I only made
10 gallons).
Recipe
Grain Bill
- 1 # Briess Caramel 40
- 8 oz Briess Caramel 90
- 18.5 # Crisp Maris-Otter and Durst Pils (mix)
Hops
- 2.5 oz Northern Brewer (8.2% AA) @60 min
- 2 oz Northern Brewer (8.2% AA) @15 min
Yeast
(not recorded; either Wyeast or White Labs California Lager yeast)
Mash
Single infusion, 2 hours at 156F
Vitals
- OG: 1.054
- FG: 1.015

Timeline
Brew day: April 9, 2006
- 9:00 am: Start heating water
- 10:10 am: Water @170F
- 10:15 am: Mashed in at 156F
- 12:15 pm: First runoff.
- 12:19 pm: Added sparge water (more than one batch? notes spotty)
- 12:50 pm: Last runoff on to boil
- 1:15 pm: Boiling
- 1:30 pm: Add bittering hops
- 2:15 pm: Add aroma hops
- 2:30 pm: Flame-out and chill
- 2:49 pm: Done, wort at 56F
- 3:20 pm: Pitched yeast
- 3:55 pm: Done with clean-up.
